BONHOEFFER, the acclaimed documentary about the German pastor and Nazi resister, will be shown to some 100 Army, Navy and Air Force military chaplains at Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina, at 11:30 am Tuesday May 1. In addition to the chaplains, representatives from Luther Theological Seminary and the Religious Studies Department at the University of South Carolina will also attend.
"For military chaplains, Bonhoeffer is a fascinating study in how he struggled with his Christian challenge to be a "peacemaker" in the world and his willingness to confront genuine evil in the form of Hitler and the Nazis," says filmmaker Martin Doblmeier. "What he faced, and what faces us all, is how to understand the will of God,
even in the midst of chaos."
Fort Jackson is the site of the Armed Forces Army Chaplaincy Center and School. One of the organizers for the Bonhoeffer event, Pastor Eric Wester, Director for Federal Chaplaincy Ministries, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, adds, "Bonhoeffer demonstrated unflinching devotion to his witness of faith. I would hope our chaplains will be inspired, like Bonhoeffer, to truly integrate the roles of pastor and prophet. Pastor Bonhoeffer is an exemplar of personal courage."
